Across the globe, many countries are on lockdown because of the fear of the spread of COVID-19. This event, reminds us of the experience of Jesus’ disciples in the gospel of John 20:19-31: “On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus 
came and stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you’”. As we are forced into solitary behind our doors, triggered by fear (you may say positive fear) of the spread of COVID-19, Jesus stands among us as concrete signs of Peace, Hope and Mercy.
“Peace is not absence of war” (sickness, uncertainty, evil…). Jesus gives us peace that the world cannot give (John 14:27). The peace Jesus offers lifts us above the reality of things happening around us such that our experiences of them will not have power over us. We receive such peace through the Holy Spirit. Peace is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. May we be filled with Peace in this time of trouble!
“Hope is not a political slogan or pipe dream. Hope is what sustains, inspires and propels” Hope is one of the strongest emotions in the world. It energizes and propels us to keep striving even in the worst situation of our lives. Jesus is our only Hope. With our eyes gazed on him, we can face tomorrow. With Jesus as our Hope, it doesn’t matter, even if we walk through the valley of darkness, sickness, death and even hopelessness (Ps 23:4). In the end, we are confident that we will win! May we be filled with Hope in this time of trouble!
Mercy is one of the attributes of God. God’s mercy is personified in Jesus. Jesus is the Merciful face of God the Father. Remember in justice God condemned us, but in mercy he redeemed us. God is always in the business of redeeming us. His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). We enjoy God’s mercy not because of our righteousness but because God in his nature is merciful. “If thou, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? (Ps 130:3-4). God does not deal with us base on our merit but base on his goodness. May God’s mercy always abound with us and heal our world!
Truly, Jesus stands in our midst. We do not need to see him or touch him or hold him… we only need to believe.
